REHOBOTH BEACH (Oct. 29, 2015) – DNREC’s Division of Parks & Recreation will host the first-ever “Boooo-B-Que By the Sea,” a two-day statewide barbeque cook-off competition beginning Friday afternoon at Delaware Seashore State Park. All proceeds from the event will benefit Delaware’s Children in Nature Initiative. The event includes live music, a 5k run/walk and local craft brewers, plus a live auction for low digit surf fishing tags.

The “Boooo-B-Que,” a Kansas City Barbeque Society* (KCBS)-sanctioned event, will be held in the South Inlet day use and campground areas. It will feature three live bands, food and an opportunity for visitors to select the “people’s choice award” winner for best chicken wings. Barbecuers from up and down the East Coast will be competing.

On Saturday, Oct. 31, the first-ever live auction for low-digit Delaware surf fishing tags will be held at 2:30 p.m. on the park’s main stage, and will be the only auction to ever feature three single-digit tags (numbers 2, 3 and 8). The black-and-white tags will have a unique, vintage look with raised letters. Bidding will open at $250. The winning bidder for each tag will receive a certificate of authenticity. Once purchased, owners will retain the tag as long as they maintain a valid surf fishing permit.

“The first online auction is also off to a fast start, and though it doesn’t end until Nov.1, 120 bids have already been made totaling over $16,000,” said Ray Bivens, director of DNREC’s Division of Parks & Recreation.

As of Wednesday, tag number 9 – the lowest-numbered tag for sale online – was at $2,700, while the bid for tag 302 stood at $1,700. Nine of the 15 plates available for sale online have bids for more than $1,000.

“Everyone keeps asking me how much plate number 2 will sell for at the live auction,” Bivens said.  “I can only answer I have no idea but I am excited that so many people seem interested in helping Delaware State Parks and are participating in the Low Digit Tag Program. Rich King from Delaware-Surf-Fishing.com says he could easily see plate number two selling for between $5,000 and $10,000.”

Only 100 or fewer low digits tags will be sold this year and all money generated by the program stays with Delaware State Parks and will be used to help fund improvements such as upgrading air stations, new playgrounds and nature center improvements.  Online auctions will continue weekly with new tag numbers through November and December.

Daily entrance fees will be in effect for the event and weekend weather is predicting two fantastic fall weather days. Visitors interested in making a weekend out of the festivities can join the fun and get a 15 percent discount off campsites at Delaware Seashore State Park. Reservations can be made online athttp://delawarestateparks.reserveamerica.com/ or by calling 877-987-2757 and using promotional code SEABBQ1515.
