Rob Lyons with a juvenile black tip shark caught in Delaware’s surf

Not long ago Rob Lyons sent DSF a photo of a juvenile black tip shark he caught in the surf.  I sent the photo to Dewayne Fox at Delaware State University to confirm it was indeed a black tip.   He said he was almost positive it was but wanted a colleague of his to confirm.  Dr. Brad Wetherbee or URI, who has worked on sharks all around the globe, confirmed this is in fact a black tip shark.   I have since had several pictures sent of these sharks and we just wanted to let everyone know they are definitely little black tip sharks and not a prohibited species.  We have had enough problems in Delaware with people removing prohibited sharks from the water, and mostly due to the fact they do not know the laws regarding sharks in Delaware waters.  If you don’t know the species of shark you have on your line, let it go just to be sure.  We have seen a  lot more sharks showing up in the surf this year, and a variety of species.
